Located 75 km from Mumbai, the Vajreshwari Temple is a famous temple in Vajreshwari, formerly known as Vadvali. It is dedicated to Goddess Vajreshwari. The original temple was at Gunj, 5 km away from Vadvali. It was moved to Vadvali after being destroyed by the Portuguese.
You can find around 21 hot water kunds within a 5 km radius of the mandir. The hot water was believed to be the blood of the demon killed by DeviÂ
Vajreshwari Temple History
In 1739, Chimaji Appa established a camp in the Vadavali region to capture the Portuguese-held Bassein fort of Vasai. The fort was unconquerable even after a three-year war. Chimaji Appa prayed to the goddess that he would build a temple for her if he conquered the fort and defeated the Portuguese.
On 16th May, the fort fell, and the Portuguese defeat in Vasavi was complete. To celebrate the victory, Chimaji Appa ordered the new governor to build the Vajreshwari temple.Â
