Located 45km from Bikaner Airport, Karni Mata Mandir is the most important tourist attraction in Bikaner. The main deity here is Karni Mata, whom the locals believe to be an incarnation of the Goddess Durga. She was a Hindu warrior sage from the Charan caste.
Karni Mata Temple is home to over 25,000 rats that inhabit and roam freely around the temple complex. The white rats here are believed to be the incarnations of Karni Mata and her sons. Hurting and killing a rat here, even by mistake, is considered a sin.
The Karni Mata Temple is built of marble. The architecture of this temple bears a resemblance to Mughal architecture. The solid silver doors add charm to the marble facade. The idol of her sisters accompanies the idol of the goddess here on either side.

Karni Mata Temple History
The most popular tale associated with the Karni Mata Temple is the tale of Laxman, Karni Mata’s stepson. One day, Laxman drowned in the Kapil Sarova in Kolayat Tehsil while he was attempting to drink water from it. Karni Mata, grieving over Laxman's loss, prays to Yama, who refuses to bring her son back to life. Moved by her will and sorrow, he reincarnated all of Karni Mata’s sons as rats.
